Interdisciplinary Education - An Avenue to Strengthen the Core:Vera Res: The Latin Primary Source Project advances interdisciplinary connection and educational innovation by obliging "language" students and their teachers to conduct actual original scholarship useful to historians. The study of Latin will always perpetuate powerful literacy and cognitive depth but, by developing this tool, students can improve their language skills while also gaining firsthand experience with historical method and primary sources. Latin and History teachers at any given school can easily bridge their subjects in method and content with this project. The project spurs interest in primary sources long ignored but directly relevant to understanding the Renaissance and Age of Exploration, the history of science and technology (via Smithsonian Dibner manuscript prospects) and the connection between the sciences and the humanities that existed prominently for centuries. In fact, translating Dibner sources bridges a humanities-to-science gap in schools that would propel STEM work among students who are not necessarily engaged in STEM. This work is “outside-the-box” scholarship and innovative “humanities-to-STEM” education in one.
